Mortar and Concrete Patching, Repair, and Resurfacing Mixes
2012 STANDARD SPECIFICATIONS FOR CONSTRUCTION - SECTION 703

GENERAL

Mortar and concrete patching, repair and resurfacing mixtures will be combined in proportions specified for the various types. Unless otherwise specified, air entrained concrete or mortar will be required. Except as otherwise provided, this work will be done according to Section 701.

Equipment

Equipment for producing concrete by volumetric batching and continuous mixing will conform to ASTM C 685. The Contractor will be required to demonstrate that the equipment is properly calibrated for yield and proportions by certification and by field tests. Equipment use will be permitted provided that a satisfactory product is obtained, as determined by the Engineer.

Mixing Concrete and Mortar

Concrete and mortar patching mixtures may be mixed and transported by any method described in section 701. Latex modified mixtures will be furnished in continuous mixing equipment.

Mixture Requirements

The mixture proportions will be as shown in Table 703-1 of the Standard Specifications for Construction, reprinted here for reference, for the various patching mortar and concrete type:

Aggregate
Weight (Dry Bulk Specific Gravity)

Gravel & Stone

2.65

Slag

2.30

Adjustments may be made by the Engineer if the specific material gravity used varies by more than 0.02 from the assumed values. The amount of water specified is approximate. The actual amount of water used will be the least amount necessary to provide the consistency required for the specific mixture.

Mortar and Concrete Patching Mixtures

Mixture Types
Indicate(s)
F,* M & C

Fine, medium and coarse

L

Latex modified

HE

High Early - increased cement content

*Type F mixtures are mortars

Mixtures*
Curing Time
(Minimum Requirements)

Regular Strength

Five days

High-Early-Strength

24 hours

*Unless otherwise specified, will be at the option of the Contractor.

The mixture used will be based on the patched area depth and the length of curing time available before the patches are opened to traffic (see Table 703-1).

Latex Modified Concrete Overlay Mixtures

This mixture is used for resurfacing existing bridge decks. The mixture used will be according to Table 703-2.

In addition to the requirements of Section 902, the 26A course aggregate will be 100 percent crushed.

Silica Fume Modified Concrete (SFMC) Overlay Mixture

This mixture is used for resurfacing existing bridge decks. The mixture shall be according to Table 703-2. The silica fume admixture is to be supplied in dry-densitied form.
