The Bureau of Bridges and Structures Construction Section has revised its 2021 Structural Fabrication Quality Manual (version 2) for a 2023 version 3 release. The manual is referenced in the MDOT Materials Quality Assurance Procedures Manual and is located on the Structural Fabrication Unit’s (SFU) website. A brief description of the revisions is presented below.

Chapter 1 (General Information):

  • Updated web links due to new website platform
  • Added narrative report writing requirements (high and low for ambient temperature and

requirements when “we” is used).

  • Added example of acceptable as-built shop drawing submittal.
  • Updated QAI qualifications for aggregate sampling.


Chapter 2 (Fabrication Inspection Procedures):

  • Revised name of subsections 2.3 and 2.4 to align with bridge and structural steel

categories delineated in 2020 spec book.

  • Added converting conventional radiographic test film to digital images.
  • Updated terminology in subsection 2.4 from “traceable” to “identifiable” to align with

industry standards for structural steel inspection.
