The asphalt emulsion must be a certified product and be supplied by a certified supplier.  The Contractor must maintain quality control and uniformity in testing procedures.  The Contractor must submit to the Engineer a daily report showing the test results, as well as other information addressed in subsection [http://mdotcf.state.mi.us/public/specbook/files/2012/506%20Slurry%20Seal.pdf 506.02.A.1.c] of the Standard Specifications for Construction.

The asphalt emulsion shall be uniformly applied at an application temperature between 145°F (63°C) and 190°F (88°C).  At no time during the operation shall the asphalt emulsion distributor be more than 150 feet (45 m) ahead of the chip spreader.

Immediately following the application of the asphalt emulsion, the chips shall be uniformly spread over the surface at the specified rate.

The rolling shall be done before the asphalt emulsion has cured.  At no time shall there be more than 150 feet (45 m) of unrolled cover material.  No cover material shall be left unrolled for more than 5 minutes.

Brooming shall be performed within 24 hours of application.  Brooming may begin within 6 hours of the application.

Placement is not permitted if there is rain, or threatening weather, and temperatures are forecast to be below 32°F (0°C) within 24 hours of completion of work.  The chip seal will not be applied if the air or pavement surface temperature is below 55°F (13°C).

This type of project has a 30 day delayed acceptance procedure.  Any major problems with the project will have to be corrected before the project will be accepted.  The inspector must observe the operation to ensure that the Contractor is following all safety rules and has proper traffic control.  The surfacing operation is the responsibility of the Contractor.  However, if the inspector observes a nonuniform surface, safety violations or traffic control violations, the Contractor must be notified immediately.  If the Contractor does not correct these violations, the project should be stopped.

It is very important that sufficient rolling be done to embed the cover material into the HMA emulsion and that any loose material be broomed off before allowing traffic onto the new surface.

Longitudinal Construction Joints in Double Chip Seal – Concern has been raised that the double chip seals are filling in centerline corrugations too much. As a result the special provision 12SP505(B) Warranty Work Requirements for Double Chip Seals contains language specifying that the base course of the chip seal will go up to the corrugations but not cover them. Fog Seals

Chip Seals with Fog Seal - Delay times

As per spec, complete application of the fog seal within 48 hours of the application of chip seal, but not on the same day as the application of chip seal.

Because the fog seal prevents stone loss and also the temporary raised markings have taken a beating (especially on a double chip seal) the first application of pavement markings after a fog seal may be placed the next day.
