Paved Ditches
2012 STANDARD SPECIFICATIONS FOR CONSTRUCTION - SECTION 814

GENERAL

In situations where high velocity flow or excessive grade occurs, paving a ditch may be necessary rather than sodding a ditch section.

There are four different types of ditch paving.

  • Cobblestone
  • Grouted Cobblestone
  • HMA
  • Concrete

Usually the type of material to be used will be specified on plans or in the proposals. Plans will also show areas where a paved ditch is necessary. Material requirements for each of these types are shown in the Standard Specifications for Construction.

In construction of the paved ditch, a well-prepared bed is very important. Materials should be laid in the manner outlined in the Standard Specifications for Construction, the Standard Plan R-46 Series and special details. Paved ditches will be measured by square meters in place.

Locations and type of ditch should be staked. The Contractor should be notified of any changes from the plan.

Use IDR with sketches and field measurements to document pay quantities. Be sure to date and sign all sketches. Also, show tie-ins on the sketches to specific locations such as stationing and side of road.

Material may be placed either by mechanical methods or by hand, as approved by the Engineer.
