2.1 General
The surveyor must adhere to all applicable OSHA and MIOSHA safety standards, including the appropriate traffic signs for the activities and conditions of the project.
MDOT safety expectations are outlined below and at a minimum the following components shall be outlined in a safety plan:
- Surveyors shall obtain the appropriate permits for working within the road Right of Way from the closest Transportation Service Center (TSC).
- Each crew shall have at least one cell phone to contact emergency personnel if necessary. A map should be in each vehicle with the location of the nearest hospital(s) located. A copy of emergency procedures should accompany the map indicating at least three (3) people to contact at the Surveyor’s office to report safety issues.
- The project surveyor shall contact MISS DIG at 1-800-482-7171 prior to any underground excavation.
2.2 Personal Protection Equipment (PPE)
- All field personnel shall use the proper personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times in accordance with MDOT’s Personal Protective Equipment Policy Guidance Document 10118.
2.3 Traffic Control
- The Surveyor should ensure that safe practices are followed according to the following manuals and guidelines:
- Michigan Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices, Part 6
- Work Zone Safety and Mobility Manual
- <Create Link> Survey Work Zone Manual
2.3.1 Coordination of Traffic Control
- The Surveyor shall discuss the project specific requirements with the Region or Local TSC Safety Engineer before work commences or a price proposal is submitted. On projects for which survey activities are consulted out, MDOT does not reimburse additional traffic control after acceptance of project costs.
2.4 Confined Space Entry
- If Confined Space Entry is necessary the Surveyor shall follow the safe practices for confined space entry according to Federal Occupational Safety & Health Standards OSHA Permit-required for confined spaces and the Michigan Department of Transportation PERMIT-REQUIRED CONFINED SPACES.
2.5 Fall Protection
- The surveyor must use the proper fall protection safety equipment when working from heights.
